چکیده

Reciprocity is a universal principle that has a profound impact on many areas of physics. A fundamental phenomenon in condensed-matter physics, optical physics and acoustics, arising from reciprocity, is the constructive interference of quantum or classical waves which propagate along time-reversed paths in disordered media, leading to, for example, weak localization and metal-insulator transition. Previous studies have shown that such coherent effects are suppressed when reciprocity is broken. Here we show that by breaking reciprocity in a controlled manner, we can tune, rather than simply suppress, these phenomena. In particular, we manipulate coherent backscattering of light, also known as weak localization. By utilizing a nonreciprocal magneto-optical effect, we control the interference between time-reversed paths inside a multimode fiber with strong mode mixing, and realize a continuous transition from the wellknown peak to a dip in the backscattered intensity. Our results may open new possibilities for coherent control of classical and quantum waves in complex systems.

Saturation-induced coherence loss in coherent backscattering of light.

We use coherent backscattering of light by cold strontium atoms to study phase-breaking mechanisms in the multiple-scattering regime. As the probe light intensity is increased, the atomic optical transition starts to be saturated. Nonlinearities and inelastic scattering then occur. The latter induces a characteristic phase-breaking time that reduces the wave coherence. In our experiment, this l...

Coherent multiple light scattering in Faraday active materials

Wave propagation in multiple scattering media shows various kinds of coherent phenomena such as coherent backscattering [1,2] or Anderson localization [3], both of which are intimately connected to the concept of reciprocity. Manipulating reciprocity in such media is a powerful tool to study these phenomena in experiments [4]. Here we discuss the manipulation of reciprocity in reflection and tr...

Magnetic-field effects on coherent backscattering of light in case of Mie spheres

– Magneto-optical Faraday rotation destroys the coherent backscattering enhancement of elastically multiple scattered light. In addition, Faraday rotation has been predicted, especially for Mie scattering, to cause a shift of the coherent backscattering cone off the exact backscattering direction in case of circular polarized light, or a twin peak in case of linear polarization (see Lenke R. an...

Weak localization and time reversal of ultrasound in a rotational flow.

A one-channel time-reversal (TR) experiment is performed inside a rough reverberating cavity in the presence of a rotational flow. The amplitude of the TR wave is plotted versus the distance between the TR channel and the initial source: when they coincide, it exhibits a "time-reversal enhancement" (TRE). With no flow, the TRE is the same as the coherent backscattering enhancement (CBE). But co...

Phase Noise Considerations in Coherent Optical FMCW Reflectometry

phase noise, coherent reflectometry, FMCW, Rayleigh backscattering, fiberoptic interferometry An analysis of coherent optical FMCW is presented. It shows the limitations imposed on measurements of discrete reflections and of Rayleigh backscattering due to phase noise originating in the finite coherence length of the optical source. The dependence of the range for accurate measurements on partic...
